Motor workers to observe chakka bandh

GUWAHATI, May 12: Irrespective of employees and employers, the whole workforces engaged in the commercial transport sector have strongly condemned the frequent price hike on petrol and diesel. Addressing the media persons in Guwahati on Saturday, All India Road Transport Workers’ Federation (AIRTWF), Sodou Asom Motor Shramik Jutiya Parishad (SAMSJP), Asom Petroleum Mazdoor Union (APMU), North East Heavy Trucks Owners’ and Drivers’ Welfare Association (NEHTWDWA) and Assam Motor Shramik Federation (AMSF) have together expressed concern on the rapid price hike and informed to the media that the organizations will observe 36 to 48-hour-long Chkka Bandh in between June 20 and 22. The AIRTWF and SAMSJP president Mathura Das highlighted that the proposed Chakka Bandh was scheduled sometime in the month of May. However, they deferred on the pretext that it might hamper the ongoing NRC hearing across the state. The organizations have also demanded various welfare schemes for the workforce.

Meanwhile, Das also strongly opposed the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill-2016 stating that the legislation will defeat the very essence of the Assam Accord. “It will adversely affect our identity. Moreover, it will stub out the ethnic Assamese from its own land and culture,” Das added.
