Move To Relieve 856 Siksha Karmis From Service Opposed

Samagra Siksha, Jyoti Kendras,protestGUWAHATI, Sept 5: The Jyoti Kendra Siksha Karmi Santha staged a protest wearing black badges on Monday against the government's decision to relieve 856 Siksha Karmis from service. Samagra Siksha, Assam (SSA) had sent a letter to 11 districts directing that 856 Siksha Karmis in these districts should be relieved from service.

SSA has been working to bring the 'out-of-school' children under the purview of education. As part of this, Jyoti Kendras were set up in urban areas for street and slum children of the age group of 6-14 year. Siksha Karmis were appointed to provide education to these children.

Addressing a press meet at Dispur Press Club in the city, Jyoti Kendra Siksha Karmi Santha president Munmum Chetia said, "Siksha Karmis were appointed by the government and have been rendering service since 2003. They have been providing education to out-of-school children in the 6-14 years age group with a meagre montly remuneration of Rs 6,500. Last year, Siksha Karmis were successful in bringing 1.80 lakh such children into the mainstream education system. Despite their selfless service, the government has decided to close down the Jyoti Kendras. We oppose this decision. We also oppose the move to relieve 856 Siksha Karmis from service."

After the press meet, police took Jyoti Kendra Siksha Karmi Santha activists to the Sachal dharna site and detained them there. They were later released.
