MP Bezbaruah resigns as Chairman of Clause 6 committee

Guwahati: Madan Prasad Bezbaruah who has been appointed as the Chairman in the high-level committee formed by the Centre for implementing Clause 6 of the Assam Accord has resigned from the said committee. Bezbaruah in a letter given to the Home Ministry on Friday mentioned that there won't be any dignity of the committee if half of the members won't be present. Earlier also three members of the committee have resigned from the committee namely Dr. Nagen Saikia and Rong Bong Terong, Litterateur and Former President of Assam Sahitya Sabha respectively and Educationist Mukunda Rajbongshi have stepped down from the panel terming the term futile and unnecessary as the Assam Accord itself was sought to be negated by the Centre for bringing up the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016.

Bezbaruah expressed his disappointment over the Union Home Ministry saying that the members were not notified prior to the formation of the committee.

However, the All Assam Students' Union (AASU) who has been a participant of the Assam Accord made it clear in the very beginning not to be a part of the committee.

Meanwhile, veteran journalist DN Bezbaruah assured to continue as a panel member to give an answer to the government with some harsh words. He further said that he is not surprised on resigning the members one by one and that the committee will serve for a very little time. At first Bezbaruah also wants to resign from the panel member but later decided to stay as he has something to say to the government some unkind words and someone has to say as this is not a minor issue. Someone has to take the step and that he will do according to his capacity as a member of the panel.

The Committee is now under the verge of getting disbanded as more than half the members have stepped out of the committee and rejected to be a part of the committee.
