GUWAHATI: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) today declared that Mrigen Sarania will be the new Mayor of the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) and Smita Roy will be the Deputy Mayor.

The announcement came after all the newly-elected BJP councillors held a meeting with State BJP leaders at the party headquarters at Hengerabari here this morning.

The meeting was attended by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and State BJP president Bhabesh Kalita, along with other senior functionaries of the party.

Talking to the media after the meeting, Bhabesh Kalita said that the opinion of all elected councilors of the BJP before the Mayor and Deputy Mayor were chosen "through democratic process".

He informed that the GMC Commissioner will issue a Notification for formation of the new GMC body within a short time. Mrigen Sarania and Smita Roy will then file their respective nominations for the posts of Mayor and Deputy Mayor.

It may be mentioned that Sarania was the Mayor of the previous GMC body was well.

Talking to the media after being declared as the new Mayor, Sarania expressed his gratitude to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and State BJP president Bhabesh Kalita, the district BJP and all party councilors.

When asked about his plans to develop Guwahati and resolve its problems, Sarania said that there are several problems such as waterlogging, garbage disposal, dearth of potable water etc. He pointed out that at one point of time, rafts used to be used in certain areas of the city during artificial floods. However, he said, the situation has improved considerably because of good work being done by the Government in the last few years. He said that whatever remains to be done will be discussed with the other councilors and accomplished with the support of the State Government.

Regarding supply of potable water, he said that as per the commitment made in the party manifesto for the GMC poll, phase-wise water supply connections is likely to commence from June. The thrust will be on supplying water 24x7, he said.
