GUWAHATI: Dr P Arun, Director of Tata Medical Center, Kolkata, delivered the Late Munshi Ram Jain Oration of Cancer Research Foundation, India (CRFI) at a function held in the auditorium of Dr B Borooah Cancer Institute (BBCI) here today.
Dr Arun spoke about the role of a surgeon as an oncologist. The CRFI is a city-based registered not-for-profit organization that started in 2015. It promotes and supports cancer research. Since its inception, the organization supported cancer researchers from reputed institutions like the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)- Mumbai, Homi Bhabha National Institute, Banaras Hindu University, and Bharathiar University in Tamil Nadu, to name a few.
Dr Amal Chandra Kataki, Chairman of CRFI and Director, BBCI said that cancer research is pivotal for its prevention, better diagnosis and management, and to improve treatment outcomes. "Unlike in developed countries, we are much behind in the field of cancer research. The profiles of cancer in developed countries are different from ours, for example, prostate cancer is common in men in the US, whereas, cancer of the oesophagus or mouth is predominantly seen here among men. So, the onus of improving the outcome for cancer of the mouth is on our indigenous research," Dr Kataki said.
On the same day, awards and grants were distributed. Late Binod Kumar Agarwal's Thesis Grant was provided to three doctors presently undergoing super speciality courses at BBCI. Late Munshi Ram Jain Cancer Scholar Award 2022 was presented to Dr Nidhi Gupta from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi.
