National Register of Citizens to Benefit the Minorities : Muminul Awal

Staff Reporter

Guwahati: Assam Minority Development Board chairman Muminul Awal has admitted that the names of a good number of Indian citizens have filed to find place in the final draft National Register of Citizens (NRC) published on July 30. In the same breath he said that there was no reason for such persons to be worried.

While the process of filing claims and objections in the matter of the NRC will be soon, he asserted that the left out people will have ample opportunity to make claim for their names to be included in the final NRC.

Awal further said that hitherto a political force has been using the minorities as mare vote bank. But with the final NRC becoming a national document, this force will not be able to use them as vote bank any more. From that point of view, the minorities themselves would reap the benefits, Awal asserted.

Stating that while non-Indians will be identified through the NRC, he vehemently criticized the stand adopted by the Congress in the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha while flaying the Congress as not being interested in making Assam foreigner-free. That the Congress always stood in favour of presence of Bangladeshis in the State and that this has now been proved by the party, he said.

Awal also opined that the State Congress leaders have also failed to project a correct picture of the NRC issue before their party Central leaders, adding that the Congress never wanted the publication of the NRC and wanted the problem to linger.

On the other hand, referring to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerje, Awal said that she is not a representative of the Bengalis of Assam, adding that her administration has not rendered the needful cooperation to the Bengalis of Bengal origin but presently residing in Assam during the NRC updating process. Satting the West Bengal CM was not interested in any solution to the influx problem in Assam, Awal asserted that Mamata Banerjee was raising a hue and cry only to mint political capital in her home state out of the Assam situation.
