GUWAHATI: Nitish Kumar-led Janata Dal (United) is likely to contest in 32 out of 126 constituencies in the Assam Assembly Election which is due in April this year.

Addressing the media, national secretary and in-charge of Assam unit of the party Sanjay Verma stated, "The party has identified at least 32 constituencies in districts such as Nagaon, Tinsukia, and Barpeta to contest against the AIUDF (All India United Democratic Front)."

"The Congress' presence in Assam is virtually negligible and the AIUDF has also lost the people's trust," said Verma.

In 2016, the JD (U) contested for four seats in the Assam polls. However, it failed to win any seat.

The JD (U) succeeded to be recognized as a State party in Arunachal Pradesh where it won seven seats in Assembly Election 2020.

"The JD (U) is strengthening its core and is getting ready for Tripura Assembly Election which is due in 2023," Verma underlined.
