No alliance proposal from Congress yet, says Badruddin Ajmal

GUWAHATI: Badruddin Ajmal -led AIUDF has said made it clear that it is yet to get any proposal for electoral understanding from the Congress for the forthcoming panchayat poll in the State, nor has it sent any proposal to the Congress for a tie-up.

The core committee meeting of the AIUDF was held in Guwahati on Saturday. Talking to the media, AIUDF president Badruddin Ajmal said: “We’ve not received any proposal for alliance during the panchayat poll from the Congress. We also haven’t sent any such proposal to the Congress. We’re an ally of the Congress-led United People’s Front (UPA) at the Centre. However, the Congress in Assam doesn’t maintain such a cordial relation with us. In the last Assembly poll in the State I tried a lot to stitch an alliance with the Congress so as to defeat the BJP. However, the proposed alliance failed to take any shape, and that led the BJP to power in the State. Now the Congress passes the buck on us saying that the BJP came to power in Assam because of the AIUDF. What I want to bring home is: what about the BJP coming to power in other States of the country where there is no AIUDF? I can foresee that if there is no understanding for an alliance between the Congress and the AIUDF in the 2019 Lok Sabha poll, the BJP will again come to power.”

On panchayat poll in the State, Ajmal said: “The BJP and the AGP have been engaged in a drama on tie-up between them. If we go for any alliance with any party, we’ll declare it openly. We’re going to field candidates only in areas where we’ve supporters’ bases.”

Ajmal said that the State Government has failed in saving the lives of infants in Jorhat Medical College and Hospital. “The State Health Minister should step down by owning moral responsibility for it,” he said.
