No alternative ground to Dighalipukhuripar as yet

GUWAHATI, May 29: Since years, the historic Dighalipukhuripar in Guwahati has been considered for mass agitation by various civil society groups, organizations, unions and association of the state to draw attention from the State. However, it resulted in causing traffic congestion in the area. Eventually, the students and the employees of the institutions nearest to the spot like the Gauhati High Court, Cotton College, Handique Girls’ College, State Museum, Reserve Bank and the like were suffering a lot. Therefore, the Lawyers Association, Guwahati had filed public interest litigation (PIL) case in the Gauhati High Court on September 11, 2017. Accordingly, the High Court after the hearing on September 16, 2017 directed the administration to find an alternative place for mass agitation in the city within three months. In the meantime, the High Court instructed the administration to keep strong vigilance within that three month period to lessen the traffic congestion. Significantly, the deadline has long been expired on April 30, last. However, the Kamrup (M) administration could not found an alternative place to accommodate the agitators for which the Lawyers Association president Sailendra Das said that they would be induced to follow legal procedure against the administration for negligence and not obeying the Court order.
