No-parking order afflicting 32-year-old daily market in Kachari Ghat

GUWAHATI: A flourishing 32-year-old daily market in Kachari ghat has been suffering from heavy loss for the past few years and the shopkeepers blame it on the government.

The dainik bazaar, Kachari Ghat, was established in 1987 under Guwahati Municipal Community (GMC) and has been successfully running all these years. However, since the onset of the BJP government in 2016, the shopkeepers of the bazaar have blamed that their business has been slowly sinking.

The residence of the Governor and the Chief Minister lies on the road crossing Kachari Ghat owing to which, a 24 hour parking ban was initiated on the road. The shopkeepers have alleged that this ban on car parking has been a downer for their business.

“The MG Path area has been declared as a no-parking zone since the reign of the Sarbananda Sonowal led government in 2016. If ever a vehicle is observed parked in the area, a fine of Rs 300 to 400 is charged. Why would any customs come all the way here if it causes them inconveniences? For this reason our age old business is failing. The government needs to understand this and revoke the 24 hour parking porhibition. An hour before the CM or Governor crosses this way, the ban can be implemented again but a whole day ban will ensure a collapse of our business”, an elderly shopkeeper of the dainik bazaar stated.
