No respite from heat in Guwahati, residents pray for rains

GUWAHATI: It has been a week since the State's capital city under a spell of virtual heat wave. No relief came to Guwahatians even on Friday as the temperature soared up to a maximum of 36.8 degrees Celsius, leaving the city residents high and dry.
Even though Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Borjhar on Thursday predicted rains on Friday, the people continued to suffer due to a blazing Sun since early morning. Majority of city residents kept themselves indoor. Power cuts in certain areas in the city aggravated the people's sufferings.
The State's capital city on Wednesday (August 5) recorded the highest ever August month temperature in the history. The city recorded a maximum of 38.6 degree Celsius which is a 6-degree departure from the normal temperature and a minimum of 27.8 degree Celsius which is a 2-degree departure from the normal temperature.
"Partly cloudy sky with one or two spells of rain/thundershowers. Maximum and Minimum temperatures are most likely to be 37°C & 27°C respectively on Saturday," the 24-hour weather forecast issued for the city by the RMC on Friday said.
On other hand the State has received 19 per cent excess rainfall this monsoon season so far. During the first half of the monsoon season (June 1 to July 31), the cumulative rainfall over Assam and Meghalaya was 1324.4 mm against normal rainfall of 1054.6 mm, a departure of 26 per cent.
