Non-payment of wages to TE workers during lockdown; Sapre panel asks Labour Commisioner to collect data

GUWAHATI: The Sapre Committee constituted by the Supreme Court to look into a petition which alleged that a section of tea gardens of the State did not pay wages to their labourers during the COVID-related lockdown, on Saturday directed the Labour Commissioner of Assam to collect data regarding the number of such workers within one month.

According to the general secretary of the Sangha, Jiten Tanti, the committee further directed the Labour Commissioner to take steps for ensuring payment of any arrear dues after collecting the necessary data.

An organization named the Asom Sangrami Chah Sramaik Sangha had filed a petition in the Supreme Court on April 10, 2020 regarding the issue. The apex court subsequently formed a one-man enquiry committee headed by retired judge Abhay Manohar Sapre to look into the matter.

Justice (Retd) Sapre held its fourth hearing at the Assam Administrative Staff College here on Saturday. Those present at the hearing for the petitioners included Tanti, central committee members Naruttom Sundi, Ghanshyam Munda, AICCTU State general secretary Pankas Kumar Das.
