Nonagenarian writer Anil Roychowdhury passes away at the age of 94

GUWAHATI: Eminent writer, renowned social activist Anil Roychowdhury passed away at the age of 94 at around 3.50 AM at his residence in Chandmari, on Friday. As per reports, he was seriously ill since last few days. Late Roychowdhury was a person who always raised his voice for the downtrodden and deprived section of the society. He has donated his body.

Born on August 27 in 1926, Roychowdhury played various active roles in the society during his lifetime. He participated in various political affairs during his school life and later joined the Congress voluntary organization in 1942. After becoming a part of Communist party, he took membership of CPI. However, after the CPI party got divided into two parts, he joined CPI (M) and remained as a leader and member of the party till his death.

During the time of India-China border dispute and the emergency situation of 1975 Roychowdhury was imprisoned for a long period. He was imprisoned three times during his lifetime for his active participation in Trade Union movement. An avid writer, Roychowdhury wrote on various social issues in different magazines like Manideep, Abahan etc. He was the editor of Natun Prithivi and was the founder member of Natun Sahitya Parishad. He worked as the general secretary of Employee Association of Gauhati University and was also the working president of All India University Employees Confederation.

Late Roychowdhury has made many important contributions to Assamese literature with his resourceful books like Axamiya Bhashar Darshan and Axomor Samaj Jiwanot Nava-Vaishnavbad. He is survived by two sons, two daughters and his grandchildren.
