GUWAHATI: In a unique incident, personnel of the Forest Department got together with local residents on Friday to protest against commencement of in the Deepor Beel area by the Northeast Frontier (NF) Railway for electrification of railway tracks passing through the Ramsar site.

The electrification work started on Friday in the stretch between the Azara and the Kamakhya Railway Station.

The protestors said that the National Green Tribunal (NGT) has banned any work on the railway track passing through the Deepor Beel area. They further stated that around 20 elephants have been already knocked down and killed on that stretched by speeding trains.

The protestors appealed to the Government to look into the matter and ensure stoppage of the illegal work at the Ransar site.
