Northeast’s Fatal Road Accidents: Assam Tops list

GUWAHATI: How safe is traffic in the city? The situation seems grim when the State ranks first in road accidents in the Northeast and sixteenth in the entire country.

As per a survey, five per cent of fatal road accidents have occurred to minors below 18 years of age, thirty per cent to people in the age bracket of 25 to 35, twenty four per cent to people in the age bracket of 35 to 45, ten per cent to people in the age bracket of 45 to 60 years and one per cent to people above 60 years.

According to officials, over-speeding, jumping red-light, use of cell phones while driving, walking on the wrong side of the road, are some of the few causes of road accidents. The alarmingly number of road accidents have been taking many lives, particularly youths in the prime of their lives, and it is the high time that all sections of the society take it seriously to reduce these types of road accidents so that the precious lives of our future generation could be saved at any cost.
