GUWAHATI: Noted Assamese singer Kula Baruah passed away at his Silpukhuri residence in Guwahati on the night of Wednesday. He was 82. His mortal remains were cremated at Nabagraha crematorium in the presence of his admirers on Thursday.

Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal condoled the demise of the singer. "This is an irreparable loss for the cultural arena in Assam. The people of the State will remember him for his contributions," he said.

The creator of a number of melodious songs, the singer was born January 21, 1938 to Late Premadhar Baruah and Late Lily Baruah. He was a student of Cotton Collegiate in 1948 and had his matriculation in 1954 from there. He had his higher education in B Barooah College. As a student in Cotton Collegiate, he started singing in All India Radio in a programme called 'Semaniya Sorai'. He was also a playback singer in a number of Assamese movies like Brishti, Pap aru Praichitta, Sadori, Endur, Srimati Mahimamayee, Prabhati Pokhir Gaan etc. He was also a music director in Assamese movies in companion with Atul Medhi, and the duo was well known as Kul-Atul. He was the music director of the popular TV serial – Naamghoria.

Musicians Ramen Baruah, JP Das, singer Namita Bhattacharjya, Amal Kataky, educationist Amarjyoti Choudhury, AASU adviser Samujjal Bhattacahrjya and others rushed to his residence to pay their last respect.

State Industries and Commerce Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary also condoled the demise of the singer. In a condolence statement, the Minister said, "Kula Baruah will be remembered for his evergreen songs and rich contribution to Assamese music and culture. His demise is an irreparable loss to the cultural arena of Assam."
