GUWAHATI: Noted writer & social activist Dr. Anima Guha passed away at a city nursing home on Thursday evening. She was 89 years of age.

She was predeceased by her husband, noted Guwahati-based historian, social scientist, academician and author Amalendu Guha, in 2015. He was 91. The couple had tied the nuptial knot in 1960. They have a son.

While the body of late Amalendu Guha's was donated to the Gauhati Medical College & Hospital (GMCH) here after a formal tribute was paid with full State honours, the mortal remains of Dr Anima Guha was donated to the Anatomy Department of the GMCH on Thursday night.

Dr Anima Guha was born to Niharika Das and Girindra Mohan Das at Dhubri on March 26, 1932. She started her school days at Kokrajhar LP School. She cleared Matriculation in the First Division from Jorhat Government Girls High School In 1947, and passed her I.SC in the First division from Cotton College in 1949. She graduated from the Botany Department of Cotton College affiliated from Gauhati University in 1952.

She completed her Masters in the Anthropology from Delhi University in 1962 and got her PhD from Pune University in 1974.

From 1952 to 1960, Dr Anima Guha taught in Abhayapuri Balika High School and Dhubri Balika High School.

She was associated with many socio-cultural organisations, and always raised her voice against superstition. She was a staunch supporter of women rights, education, and development.

She has written several books and also contributed articles on varied fares to many journals and magazines as well as newspapers. Mention may be made of her following books 'Tritoiya Biswabaxinir America Darshan', 'Tritoiya Biswabaxinir Dristit Nari Aru Samaj' , 'Mon Mor Uroniaya Pakahi', Neel Akaxar Talat', and 'Emothi Abhigyata' besides her autobiography 'Jeevanar Jowar-Bhatar Majedi' and 'Jeevanar Jowar-Bhata. She also translated into Assamese a number of books from other languages including English and Bengali among others.

Many organisations, including AASU, have condoled her demise. as well as Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, former CM Sarbananda Sonowal, State BJP president Bhabesh Kalita, APCC president Bhupen Kumar Borah among others have also condoled her demise.
