NRC Cut-off Year Should Be 1951: Assam Sanmilita Mahasangha (ASM)

GUWAHATI: The date of releasing final NRC is knocking at the door, whereas the Assam Sanmilita Mahasangha (ASM) demands 1951 as the cutoff year instead of 1971 on the basis of which the whole procedure of NRC has been completed.

Addressing the media at Guwahati Press Club on Monday ASM working president Motiur Rahman claimed, “The NRC that is to be published on August 31 by taking 1971 as its cutoff year will only ensure the safety of the foreigners and outsiders. Assam will not allow a single immigrants name into the NRC.”

Rahman further said, “Different body of Assam formulated with the indigenous people of Assam met the Supreme Court for a permanent and acceptable solution of the 73 year long illegal immigrants issue only in the basis of Constitutional equal status, equal right and equal respect. If the constitutional bench with five member of the Supreme Court doesn’t provide justice to Assam then Assam will be regarded as being colonized by India.”

Rahman added that the constitutional bench must finalize whether the dates including 1966, the voter list of 1967, 24th March 1971 and 3rd december 2004 that has been used for Indian citizenship is on the basis of Constitution. The body claimed that the procedure of updating NRC without finalizing the cutoff year is a childish act. The body further questioned that was it a political conspiracy that the bench of two members under Justice Ranjan Gogoi passed the order for NRC update with 1971 as cutoff year. Rahman added, “The body feels Justice Ranjan Gogoi’s role to be dissatisfactory, as being an Assamese by birth, he did little for the sake of the Assamese people even after standing with the position of chief justice.”
