NRC (National Register of Citizens) workers decry their release from job

GUWAHATI: Around 272 contractual junior assistants who were released by the NRC (National Register of Citizens) State Coordinator on March 26, 2021 have demanded the stay on their release order.
The contractual junior assistants were released on the pretext of the RGI's (Registrar General of India) advice to the Home and Political Departments of Assam to cut costs of the NRC updation process. The employees' predicament is that they have none to seek help from. Due to the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) in place, they cannot highlight their plight before the government.
To express their plight the NRC employees addressed the media at Dispur Press Club on Wednesday.
"Around 55,000 permanent employees are associated with the NRC process. The advertisement for recruitment of junior assistants in the NRC process was published on August 2, 2014, and we were appointed after qualifying three examinations - written, viva, and computer test. Initially we were appointed for 11 months. Later on our contracts were extended for another 11 months. However, for the last six years we were working without any new contract. We were released from our services on the pretext of the Registrar General of India's advice," said Arup Khatoniar, one of the employees who were been released from jobs.
Further, the employees pointed out that the State BJP in its election manifesto (Sankalp Patra) has stated to correct the NRC in Assam.
"After the release of the 272 employees on March 26, several grade IV employees of NSKs were also released on March 30. The government has made us disable as we have nowhere to go now. How will the government complete the process without these employees?" Khatoniar questioned.
The released junior assistants have demanded stay on their release order before the completion of their notice period on April 30.
