GUWAHATI: With buildings at a deplorable condition, constructed in the year 1969, the people of Old Harijan Colony of Fatasil are leading an uncertain life. There are a total of four buildings for Harizans and all of them are in a deplorable condition and on its way to get collapsed soon.

On Tuesday night, a cornice from one building broke and fell down. It is to be mentioned that a part of the building had collapsed in the year 1991 and five women were grievously injured while one succumbed to her injuries.

A leader of Harijan Majdur Union, R N Prasad said, “A survey was done in 1994 and the building was declared too dilapidated to live in. As such, a new building was supposed to be constructed, however, no initiative was taken to resolve the problem.”

Prasad further added, “Rupees 54 crore was sanctioned for the construction of new building and 27 crore from that amount still remains unutilized. In 2019, Chairman of the National Commission for Safai Karmachari visited the area and forwarded the message to vacate the people to some other place. But this too remained far from fulfilled.”
