Opposition Demands Resignation of CM Sarbananda Sonowal, Excise Minister

GUWAHATI: The mass death incident in Golaghat owing to consumption of local brew alcohol has been condemned vehemently and opposition parties have voiced their take on the situation.

Speaking at a press meet on Saturday, APCC president Ripun Bora has demanded the resignation of both the CM Sarbananda Sonowal and Excise Minister Parimal Suklabaidya, as he blamed the inability of the ruling party for the disaster in Golaghat.

“The government has not taken the outrageous incident seriously. By performing just a simple enquiry, they want to wrap up the entire case”, Bora accused. He demanded an intensive probe and a judicial enquiry to dig out the problem from its root.

Bora further declared, “The incident has barren the inabilities of the Assam Government as well as the Excise Department. The Excise minister should accept his moral obligation and resign from his post. If he doesn’t, then the CM should recall his Zero Tolerance axiom and discharge Parimal himself.” At the recent Assembly, the State Government had proudly affirmed the increase of revenue of alcohol. With the death of so many people, Bora questioned if this was the success that the Excise Department was talking about. He further demanded a relief of Rs 5 lakh for the families of the deceased.

Meanwhile, MLA Mrinal Saikia spoke about conspiracies of the opposition and their association in the incident. Bora on his part, replied, “If Saikia has got any proof regarding his allegation, I gladly ask of him to produce it publicly.”
