GUWAHATI: The State Government will add 7.50 lakh new Orunodoi beneficiaries from this year, besides enhancing the amount of financial help to the beneficiaries from the existing Rs 1,000 to Rs 1,250 per month with effect from October 10 this year.

According to sources in the Finance Department, Assam has around 19.32 lakh Orunodoi beneficiaries since its launch in December 2020. According to sources in the department, the Orunodoi month, which began on August 20, will conclude on September 20, 2022. During this one-month drive, the department will ascertain if the financial status of any of the present Orunodoi beneficiaries got uplifted. If the government finds an uplift in the financial condition of any existing beneficiaries, it will delete such names from the Orunodoi database. Thus, after September 20 this year, the department will get a clean Orunodoi database and start the addition of 7.50 new Orunodoi beneficiaries to the database. The government will spell out the selection procedure for new Orunodoi beneficiaries soon. The department expects to complete the process of the addition of new Orunodoi beneficiaries by the end of this year.

The beneficiaries will get the enhanced Orunodoi benefit after the Durga Puja this year. With the enhancement of the financial help under the Orunodoi Scheme, Rs 240 crore will go from the state exchequer every month.

The main objective of the Orunodoi scheme is to financially help the deprived/ poor in the state and improvise their life through substantial income support. The Orunodoi Scheme envisages poverty eradication and socio-economic inclusion of financially vulnerable families of the state.

The twin objectives of the Orunodoi Scheme are – the economic empowerment of women and taking the poor out of BPL following the commitment to sustainable development goals (SDGs).
