GUWAHATI: The overall crimes in Guwahati from January to July, 2022 fell by 48 per cent from the corresponding period in 2021. However, murders in the city in the first seven months of this year rose by 23 per cent from the corresponding period last year. Crimes under the NDPS (Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances) Act registered a 17 per cent rise this year.

"Ninety per cent of the murders in the city took place in known social circles and family circles," the Commissioner of Police said.

The Commissioner of Police further said, "As many as 151 cases under the NDPS were registered in the city till July this year against 128 cases during the corresponding period last year. The reason behind the rise in the number of cases under the NDPS Act is the intensified operations against drugs since the new Government took oath in May last year. The police registered a case under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act and two cases under the Wildlife Act this year. The police registered no such cases last year."

He said that although the police is not issuing e-challans for traffic-rule violations for the time being, that should be treated as a licence to violate the rules. Singh urged all drivers to opt for lane driving, single parallel parking and give right of way to pedestrians at designated places.

Singh also warned the owners and drivers of city buses that heavy fines will be imposed for any violation of traffic rules.
