Paltan Bazar Police Station Staggering Under Load of Pending Cases!

Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI: Paltan Bazar police station has as many as 4,710 cases pending since 2006. The police station has been literally staggering under the load of pending cases.

Paltan Bazar is a busy commercial area in Guwahati where policing should have been smooth enough to tackle every eventuality promptly. However, this is simply no happening, and one of the reasons behind this is shortage of manpower.

According to a source, the police station has just 14 constables against 65 sanctioned posts and one nayak against two sanctioned posts. It has one inspector and four sub-inspectors (SIs) against eight sanctioned posts. There are five ASI against as many sanctioned posts. There are only three havildars against nine sanctioned posts. The police station has only two women personnel against five sanctioned posts.

According to sources, the police station area witnesses many cases relating to frauds, theft, snatching of valuables, fleeing with luggage and the like. The Guwahati Railway Station being located in the area also adds to the number of cases in the police station. This part, being closer to the railway station people are seen moving around in the area even late at night, leading to the occurrence of more incidents within the jurisdiction of the police station.

Parking of vehicles in the yard of the police station is a problem. The yard is seen filled with seized bikes and other vehicles.
