GUWAHATI: The Guwahati Yuba Nagarik Samiti (GYNS) has appealed to the State government to rethink on its decision to reopen all primary schools in the State at a time when there has been panic regarding the detection of a new coronavirus strand.

In a statement issued to the media on Friday, GYNS president Kailash Sarma said, "The new corona strand has been detected in England, Germany, Spain, Australia, America and India. It has also been detected in a person of Jorhat who returned from England recently. He is under treatment in Guwahati. According to scientist, this variant is 70-time more powerful than the previous one. It can spread very fast.

"In such a situation, the State Education Minister's decision to reopen primary schools in the State from January 1, 2021 is under question. Who'll take the responsibility if kids get infected? Nobody can take risk with the life of kids. If anything unpleasant happens the State government will have to be responsible for that. We oppose this decision of the State government, and appeal to the State Education Minister to reconsider his decision to reopen primary schools of the State."
