Patowary calls upon horticulture exporters to take opportunity of growing demand

GUWAHATI: Industries and Commerce Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary held a detailed discussion on the prospects of infrastructure, logistics and policy for export of horticultural and food processing items through air cargo in a webinar on Monday.

"Assam produces a lot of fresh fruits, vegetables and spices which have tremendous scope for exports. In the recent past, export of these food products have been taking place to countries like UAE, UK, Canada and Hong Kong," said Patowary.

Interacting with the exporters and agro entrepreneurs, Minister assured that State Government is committed to create an enabling environment and ecosystem for promotion of exports from Assam.

In order to augment the export potential of the horticultural items, a perishable air cargo terminal at LGBI airport (Borjhar) has been set up by AIDC, stated a release. The Air Cargo Complex at Guwahati Airport has facilities for handling perishable items like fresh fruits and food processing goods.

Since the exporters from North East are first generation entrepreneurs in this sector, they require support, handholding and guidance. Patowary asked the department officials to utilize the Union Government's Krishi Udaan Scheme, Operation Greens, and State Government's incentives under Agri Export Policy and Export and Logistics Policy to support these exporters and entrepreneurs.

It may be mentioned that Spice Jet has recently launched cargo flights for the North East for export of fresh fruits and food processing items. Patowary called upon the entrepreneurs, air cargo handlers, freight forwarders, air carriers to take the opportunity of exporting horticulture products and reap the benefits for the economic development of the region.

Dr. KK Dwivedi, Commissioner and Secretary; Diwakar Nath Misra, Chairman, APEDA; MD, AIDC; senior officials from Airport Authority of India, NEDFi, Federation of Indian Exports Organisation (FIEO), DGFT, SpiceJet etc. were present in the webinar.
