GUWAHATI: Given the forthcoming Dipawali celebrations, the Pollution Control Board, Assam (PCBA), will monitor the air quality in Guwahati a week before the Dipawali and week after the festival, an official of the PCBA here said on Friday.

PCBA also monitors sound or noise pollutions in the city ahead of the Dipawali, the official said.

The air quality degrades sharply after the rainy season due to dust and emissions by vehicles and industries. The dry winter may pose a challenge to handle the situation, the official said.

Taking the moderate air quality in the city into account, the government has not banned firecrackers in this Dipawali. "However, we appeal to the people to celebrate a Green Dipawali this year also," he said.

The air quality degrades from November to March every year as there is no rain during this period. The bursting of firecrackers during Dipawali may worsen the air quality. The emission of poisonous gas from crackers and pollutants present in the air poison smoke.

PCBA operates six National Air Quality Monitoring Programme stations in Guwahati. A station each is located at Bamunimaidam, Khanapara, Boragaon, inside ITI at Rehabari, Pragjyoti College at Bharalumukh and the Gauhati University at Jalukbari in the city.

A few parameters determine the Air Quality Index (AQI) for a city or a town.

The AQI hinges on ambient air quality parameters like PM2.5, PM10, O3, NO2, SO2, CO etc. PCBA monitors the presence of these parameters.
