GUWAHATI: With accidents involving two-wheelers on the rise in recent times, the Guwahati traffic police has decided to stringently enforce wearing of helmets by pillion riders of two-wheelers. Informing this Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Traffic, Hiranya Kumar Barman on Monday said that strong action would be taken against violators for not wearing helmet on two-wheelers. From now on, both the driver and the pillion rider will have to wear helmet while riding motorcycles. The city traffic police will also launch a massive drive to spread awareness among two-wheelers drivers and pillion riders on the importance of wearing helmets, the Traffic DCP said.

Following the Amendment in 2019 to the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, it is now mandatory for all pillion riders above the age of four to wear helmets and non-compliance of this rule attract penalties.
