
GUWAHATI: The Gauhati University NSS Cell organized a mega plantation drive at the Birkuchi hillside area on Saturday, which concluded on Sunday.
According to a press release, the drive has been organized keeping in view of combating climate change and focusing on achieving sustainable development goals framed by the United Nations.
Inaugurating the programme, Dr Ranjan Kumar Kakati, Director of Students' Welfare and Programme Coordinator, NSS, Gauhati University, said that climate change is a global problem and every citizen has the responsibility to overcome this problem. One of the easiest ways to solve this problem is the plantation of saplings. Dr Kakati further mentioned the social responsibilities of NSS volunteers and appealed to each individual to plant 10 saplings every year.
Nagen Daimary, president of Boha Gohain Than, Khemraj Sarma, member of Panchayat of the Birkuchi village area, Rabin Bhattacharjee, member of Boha Gohain Than and Mohendra Rohang, social worker, spoke on the occasion and appreciated the noble initiative taken by Gauhati University NSS Cell.
Earlier, welcoming the guests and participants, Dr Rituparna Bora, NSS, PO, GU campus NSS Unit, explained the activities of the NSS volunteers and their role in the society. Priya Dutta, NSS volunteer, GU campus, moderated the programme. All NSS volunteers and villagers planted saplings in the Birkuchi hillside.
