GUWAHATI: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday said that police personnel are efficient and they will be successful in combating the recent trend of senior citizens being targeted by miscreants.

Speaking on the sidelines of the launch of the party manifesto for the Guwahati Municipal Corporation election, Sarma said: "Guwahati is normally considered as a very safe destination. However, of late we have seen that elements have entered Guwahati and they are trying to take advantage of senior citizens at certain points of time. Police is acting, the police working. I am sure that police will be able to address all the problems that we have seen of late."

He said that he is confident that the police will be able to curb criminal activities through methods such as remote cameras and human intelligence.

Sarma further said that as result of the State Government's determination to control criminals, organized crime has come down by 39 per cent in the last three months in the city.

In response to a media person's observation that many policemen have to perform their duty while getting drenched by rain, Sarma quipped: "Police personnel will have to do their duty even while standing in the rain. If police and Army personnel cannot tolerate the rain, how will they serve the nation?"

He said that even Chief Ministers have to perform their duty even if it entails getting wet in the rain.

"Nobody can enjoy the luxury of a comfort zone. If the Army and police start having comfort zones, then the public can never remain safe," he said.

The Chief Minister pointed out that policemen are trained for all-terrain and all-weather duty.
