STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI, July 4: The Panikhaiti police arrested the prime accused of the cash-for-mark scam in Down Town University (DTU), Gunajit Choudhury, from Guwahati on Wednesday. Choudhury had been absconding ever since the revelation of the scam. Since 2012, some former students of DTU, including Choudhury, had been running a racket which had allegedly received bribes ranging from Rs 5,000 and above from certain students to enhance pass marks.

According to police sources, DTU authority on getting to know about the row lodged an FIR on June 25 this year highlighting four suspects. Accordingly, the police arrested one identified as Jal Noor Uddin Ahmed earlier in connection with the scam. Significantly, as soon as the case was registered, the prime accused Choudhury, who was a faculty at DTU, tendered his resignation and went missing. While Choudhury joined the DTU as faculty in 2011, Jal Noor Uddin Ahmed passed out from the institute in 2015.
