Prom night at SNBC Hostel of Cotton University raises eyebrows

GUWAHATI: The SNBC Hostel of Cotton University held a prom night on Monday night. Hostel boarders and students from hostels and colleges reportedly attended the prom night, which continued till late in the night. At a time when the COVID-19 pandemic is far from over and the Omicron variant is posing a new threat, the conscious section of society has questioned this move of the SNBC hostel authority to allow such a programme to be held in the hostel premises.

An ex-Cottonian, while talking to The Sentinel, said, "Being a Cottonian, I have always taken pride in this educational institution and its academic activities. Student boarders of the hostels of Cotton University share very strong emotions and sentiments. Hostels have always organized freshmen social programmes to welcome the new boarders. But this prom night is a new thing."

He further said, "Cotton University has a tradition and culture that all Cottonians take pride in. Today one hostel held a prom night, tomorrow other hostels may also hold prom nights. This new trend of prom night may slowly erode the old tradition of Cotton University. The University authority usually does not interfere in matters related to hostels but in such cases, the University authority must speak."

The prom night programme reportedly continued till late at night and hardly anyone wore face masks. At a time when Gauhati University has been closed till December 19, 2021, after some students tested positive for COVID-19, should such programmes be held in educational institutions where students are exposed to the risk of the virus?
