Protest held in Guwahati city as per North East Students Organization's call

GUWAHATI: Along with the rest of the Northeastern region, a protest programme was carried out in the city on Wednesday under the aegis of the All Assam Students' Union (AASU) as per a call given by the North East Students Organization (NESO).

The protest programme was carried out in support of various demands of the NESO, which include repeal of the Citizenship (Amendment) ACT (CAA); a permanent solution to the problem of illegal migrants in the North-East; weeding out of jihadi and fundamentalist elements from the region; total withdrawal of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA) from the North-East; Imposition of the Inner Line Permit system in all States of the region; 'national calamity' status of the flood and erosion problem of Assam; grant of Constitutional safeguards to the indigenous people of Tripura and Assam, etc.

The city police did not permit the AASU activists to stage their protest at the rotary point near the Gauhati Club and the protestors observed their programme within police barricades at the Swahid Nyas at Ujanbazar.

A meeting was also held on the occasion, which was addressed, among others, by AASU's chief advisor Samujjal Bhattacharjya, its president Dipankar Kumar Nath, general secretary Sankor Jyoti Baruah and NESO secretary-general Sinam Prakash Singh. While all the leaders asserted that their protest cannot be ended through oppressive measures, Bhattacharjya said that students will study as well as carry out peaceful, democratic protests over these issues.
