PwD allegedly deprived of Government job despite court order

GUWAHATI: An allegation has surfaced that a Person with Disabilities (PwD) has not been appointed in a Government job even though almost two years have elapsed since the Court of the Commission for Persons with Disabilities, Assam passed an order to this effect.

The secretary of the Divyanga Manch Axom, Shamim Ahmed told the media at the Dispur Press Club on Monday that the Panchayat & Rural Development Department had issued an advertisement in August, 2017 for recruitment to various posts. The written examination under the recruitment process was held in December, 2017 and the result was announced in November, 2018.

Ahmed said that the vacant posts included 1,850 accredited engineers and the names of 1,740 candidates were announced as being selected for appointment. These included 15 PwD candidates. Ahmed said that as per the advertisement, 55 posts of accredited engineers were supposed to be reserved for PwD candidates, which meant that 40 such posts reserved for PwDs remained vacant.

Subsequently, he said, an aggrieved PwD candidate named Mokbul Hussain Laskar took up the matter with the Court of the Commission for Persons with Disabilities, Assam. In June, 2020, the court directed the Commissioner of the Panchayat & Rural Development Department to issue an order for the appointment of Mokbul Hussain Laskar within 90 days.

However, the court's order has not been implemented even now, Ahmed alleged.
