Rule being drafted for jobs of martyrs' kin says Assam Government

GUWAHATI: The State government has informed the Assam Assembly that a new rule is being drafted to ensure appointment to the next of kin of Assam Agitation martyrs who were left out from getting government jobs earlier.

Raising the issue on the floor of the Assam Assembly on Wednesday, AGP MLA Ramendra Narayan Kalita requested the government to ensure government jobs for Assam Agitation martyrs’ kin who have not got government jobs.

On behalf of the Assam Accord Implementation Minister, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary said, “During the AGP regime over 500 next of kin of Assam Agitation martyrs were given government jobs under the APS (PA) Rules, 1999 on compassionate ground. At that time some of the kin of martyrs were either underage or under-qualified. Such candidates were left out from getting jobs. However, after that, the Supreme Court of India issued an order imposing restrictions on appointment on compassionate ground, thereby invalidated the APS (PA) Rules, 1999.”

Patowary, however, added, “Now Personnel (B) Department has been drafting a new rule so as to ensure the appointment of the left out martyrs’ kin in government departments. The Personnel (B) department did seek the view of the Assam Accord Implementation Department on the new rule, and the latter has already given its views. After the drafting of the new Rules, it will go the Cabinet for its approval. The remaining next of kin of the Assam Agitation martyrs will be given government jobs after that.”
