Rural Poll in Kamrup (M): 1,88,943 Voters To Decide Fate of 686 Aspirants

GUWAHATI: Along with other districts of the State going for panchayat poll in the first phase, the campaign concluded at 3 pm on Monday in Kamrup (M) district. The polling will begin from 7 a.m. and continue till 3 p.m. on December 5.

The election will be held in 21 panchayat areas comprising 256 polling booths in the district. As many as 38 sector officers and 11 zonal officers will be deployed to ensure peaceful polling in the district. Sonaram Higher Secondary School will be used as the strongroom in the district.

Addressing the press on Monday, Deputy Commissioner Virendra Mittal said that 19 candidates from six zila parishads, 56 candidates from three anchalik panchayats and 72 president candidates from 21 gaon panchayats and 539 candidates for GP member are contesting. A total of 131 of the 686 candidates in fray in the district are females. Six GP members – two of the BJP and four of the Congress – have won uncontested. The electorate for panchayat poll in the district has 1,88,943 voters – 94,904 males and 94,039 females. Following an order from Deputy Commissioner, dry day is to be strictly observed till December 5 and also on the day of counting of votes to prevent any untoward incident related to consumption of liquor.
