RYM raps government on floods

GUWAHATI, June 23: The Rashtriya Yuva Morcha’s (RYM) Assam president Rajeeb Kakati has condemned the failure of the BJP government to take proper measures to tackle floods in the State.

He said: “The egovernment has failed to streamline the assigned officers regarding this matter. They have been repeating their slogan– ‘Jaati Maati aru Bheti’ but there is no sincere attempt made by them to solve this issue.”

The first wave of flood has already hit the State and a lot of people have been affected by it. People have become homeless and they are allegedly affected due to scarcity of food in almost all the flood-hit areas.

“The government has distributed relief packages among the public. Last year, Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared Rs. 2,000 crore for the five states of the Northeast and Rs. 100 crore for the development of the river Brahmaputra. They also declared Rs. 250 crore for Assam alone. But one of the promises has been translated into reality,” he added. A lot of places in the State are facing soil erosion due to the floods. Although, the government has stipulated timeframes for the completion of flood-control projects, nothing happens in due course of time.

Pankaj Pratim Talukdar, the state general secretary of the Rashtriya Yuva Morcha said, “Even after allotting so much amount of money, no development is seen. No one knows where the money goes. The government reacts to the situation only when it gets worse.” A few days ago, the first wave of floods partially damaged Behali’s irrigation projects of worth Rs. 3,500,000.
