 GUWAHATI: "The great leaders of the Hul revolution or Santhal revolution, which took place in present Jharkhand's Bhognadih village, Sidhoo, and Kanhu, always inspired us to make extreme sacrifices for the cause of our motherland," Bimal Borah, Minister for Cultural Affairs, Industries, etc., Department, Assam, said in his speech as the chief guest in the open session of the central programme of Hul Divas today at Srimanta Sankaradeva auditorium at Panjabari in the city. The minister also said that the Chaotali people have a great relationship with nature, which is reflected in their colour of attire and in their dance form. The minister also requested the Chaotal Students' Union and Chaotal Sahitya Sabha to write a book on the Hul Revolution in the Assamese language for the people of the state to know. The 168th Hul Day not only memorialises the heroes of the Hul Rebellion but also symbolises our collective reverence for the countless individuals who fought against British rule, the minister reiterated.

It is worth mentioning here that the revolution took place on June 30, 1855. In this revolution, almost 50,000 Chaotali people took part and fought with their traditional weapons against the British. It was one of the greatest revolutions in India against British colonialism, and approximately 20,000 people sacrificed their lives.

The open session of the 168th Hul Day, commemorating the Heroes of the Hul Rebellion, was presided over by the president of the Assam Chaotal Students' Union. The meeting was attended by Member Parliament Kamakhya Prasad Tasha, Prithivi Majhi, former Speaker of Assam Legislative Assembly, Pankaj Kumar Nath, President of All Assam Journalists Union, and other dignitaries. A memorandum with some demands of the Assam Chaotal Students' Union was handed over to the Cultural Affairs Minister in the meeting by the General Secretary of the Student Union, a press release said.
