GUWAHATI: The Governments of Assam and Maharashtra have reached a consensus for establishing a Maharashtra Bhawan in Guwahati along with a second Assam Bhawan in Mumbai.

This was decided at a dinner hosted by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma at a city hotel on Saturday for his Maharashtra counterpart Eknath Shinde and his team, which had come to the city to pay obeisance at the Kamakhya temple.

Talking to mediapersons after the dinner, Chief Minister Sarma said that the dinner was hosted in honour of the guests of the State. "During the discussions, I told the Maharashtra Chief Minister that the Assam Bhawan in Mumbai is mainly used for cancer patients. So there is a need for a second Assam Bhawan and I requested him to allot land for the purpose. He immediately agreed. Similarly, the Maharashtra CM also said that many people from Maharashtra come to Guwahati to visit the Maa Kamakhya temple so they also need land for a Maharashtra Bhawan here, and I agreed to allot land."

Sarma further said that there are many similarities between Assam and Maharashtra and inflow of tourists from that State has increased after Eknath Shinde's earlier visit to the Kamakhya temple. The relationship between Assam and Maharashtra will grow stronger in the time to come, he said.

Meanwhile, the team led by Shinde returned to Mumbai on Sunday.
