Section  144 imposed in Guwahati

GUWAHATI, May 19: Taking exception to the rising trend of protest and agitation across the state, more particularly in Guwahati, the Deputy Commissioners of Police (DCP), East Police District and Central Police District, Guwahati together have imposed section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure with immediate effect in any area under the jurisdiction.

The order was issued by Dr Ramandeep Kaur, DCP, East Police District and Ranjan Bhuyan, DCP Central Police District, Guwahati which prohibits gathering of more than five persons, speculating a breach of peace and public order which particularly may cause disturbance to the smooth functioning of the NRC work.

Terming the prohibition as a preventive measure to ensure peaceful movement of public, traffic and also normal functioning of the NRC work, the order prohibits assembly of more than five persons, agitation, demonstration, procession and shouting of slogans.

However, the communiqué said that any person aggrieved by the order is at liberty to appear before the respective Deputy Commissioners of Police for filling written objection, if any, for cancelation and modification of the order.
