Section 144 of CrPC in Guwahati ahead of anti-Citizenship Bill rally

GUWAHATI: The Assam Government on Thursday imposed section 144 of CrPC in the Greater Guwahati areas in view of the massive mass rally scheduled to be taken out on Friday by 70 different organizations in protest against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016. An official communiqué issued on Thursday stated that section 144 has been imposed to take preventive measures to ensure peaceful movement of public, traffic and also normal functioning of offices in Greater Guwahati areas during the rally.

DGP Kuladhar Saikia told reporters on Thursday that anyone taking law into his or her hand during the Friday’s rally will face actions as per the laws. The 70 organizations have condemned the administration and police move terming it as anti-democratic and fascist to suppress the voice of the people against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act. The representatives of the organizations said their rallies on the same issue took out in different parts of the State was completely peaceful and democratic and the police has no right to impose 144 for the Friday’s rally in Guwahati.
