Security Beefed Up In Assam Ahead of NRC Publication

Guwahati: Ahead of the publication of the final NRC list on August 31st, DGP Assam Police, Kuladhar Saikia on Friday stated that all the sensitive areas in the city have been identified and the police department is keeping a strict vigilance in and around state.

Addressing a press conference at Assam Police Headquarter, DGP Saikia said that on August 23rd, 2019 he himself participated in a meeting with the Deputy Commissioners of all the districts on the law and order conditions.

DGP Saikia also mentioned the police department has been instructed to keep a strict vigil on social media and take action against those who spread fake news and hate messages.

As per reports, the Centre has sent 51 additional companies of the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) to Assam to maintain law and order situation.

It is to be noted that both the centre and state government are not ready to leave any lapse on the post-NRC publication situation in the state.

It is to be mentioned that, as many as 174 companies of CAPF are deployed in the state on NRC duty.

The complete draft of NRC, containing names of 28,983,677 out of 32,991,384 applicants, was published on July 30 last year.

Around 40.07 lakh people were left out from the complete draft of NRC and nearly 36 lakh people have filed their claims for inclusion their names in the final NRC.

An Additional Draft Exclusion list of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) was published on June 26 last consisting of 1,02,462 persons.

About National Register of Citizens

The National Register of Citizens (NRC) is a register containing names of all genuine Indian citizens. The register was first prepared after the 1951 Census of India.

The NRC is now being updated in Assam to include the names of those persons (or their descendants) who appear in the NRC, 1951, or in any of the Electoral Rolls[4] up to the midnight of 24 March 1971 or in any one of the other admissible documents issued up to mid-night of 24 March 1971, which would prove their presence in Assam or in any part of India on or before 24 March 1971.
