GUWAHATI: Members of Srimanta Foundation, Assam with its secretary had a meeting with Dipok Kr. Barthakur, vice chairman, State Innovation & Transformation Aayog at the latter's office chamber at Janata Bhawan, Dispur. The meeting was held to discuss about the lifestyle and socio-economic conditions of Uddasin Bhakats of Assam.

Dipankar Mahanta, trustee & secretary of Srimanta Foundation for Culture and Society, gave a power-point presentation on the status of Uddasin Bhakats of Assam. From the presentation it was observed that agriculture is the major source of livelihood of the Xatras. Most of the Uddasins Bhakats are concentrated in the districts of Lakhimpur, Majuli, Jorhat, Golaghat etc. From the presentation, it can be assumed that people are less attracted towards the tradition of becoming a Bhakats and most of them have left the Xatras due to socio-economic problems, a press release said.
