Skip COVID tests for emergency patients, Debabrata Saikia urges Dispur

GUWAHATI: The essential health services are not being maintained in various hospitals and medical colleges, alleged Leader of Opposition in the Assam Legislative Assembly Debabrata Saikia.

His statement came in regard to various reports of medical apathy where patients in need of urgent attention were deprived of treatment due to conduction of COVID tests. He appealed the State government to provide treatment to the patients who are in urgent need of medical assistance, without conducting the COVID-19 tests.

"Patients visiting the hospitals and medical colleges to get urgent medical assistance have to go through COVID tests. If they are treated on an urgent basis then their chances of survival will improve. In this regard, the central government has provided a 12-page notice to the State government. In the notice, the Centre ordered the State to ensure provision of healthcare services to non-COVID patients. However, we have seen that COVID tests are conducted on people who are in need urgent medical assistance. If they are found negative then only they are provided treatment," said Saikia.

Further, the leader shared an incident from Biswanath, where a pregnant woman didn't receive treatment and was forced to deliver the baby at the COVID ward.

He also pointed out that in various hospitals, Health workers are not present to provide oxygen masks to the patients. Such incidents have occurred in Silchar Medical College and Jorhat Medical College which has led to loss of lives, Saikia underlined.
