GUWAHATI: The Special Police Officer Welfare Society appealed to the state government that those Special Police Officer (SPO) jawans who are not permanently recruited in the home department should be recruited in third or fourth grade posts of any department, keeping in mind their age.

In a press meet, society’s president, Jitumoni Saharia, and secretary, Mrityunjay Borah, said that “since 2008 to 2015, the jawans of SPO were appointed in various disturbed districts of the state. That time, when the SPO jawans were posted in Dima Hasao (earlier North Cachar), many of them became injured and lost their lives. In 2010, the government appointed almost 1000 members of DHD (Dima Halom Dauga), the then-insurgent group. So, the society raised the question, since those SPOs have arms training, why cannot the government give them permanent recruitment?”

“We have raised our issues for the permanent recruitment of the SPOs since 2010. On September 19, 2013, the government gave a written assurance that the 3rd AISF (Assam Industrial Security Force) would be set up and where the SPOs would be appointed. But, in 2017, the government did not set up the 3rd AISF but decided to recruit SPOs in the 1st and 2nd AISF and Assam Police. In regards to that, 145 SPO jawans were appointed in 2022. But, among the 1000, only 145 got recruited, and the rest of the SPOs did not. So, we are asking the government to take steps regarding those SPOs who are still not recruited”, the society further stated.
