State condoles death of Somnath Chatterjee

GUWAHATI, Aug 13: Assam Governor Prof Jagdish Mukhi mourned the death of Somnath Chatterjee who breathed his last on Monday.

In a statement, Prof Mukhi said, “Saddened to learn the death of Somnath Chatterjee. A prudent and towering personality in Indian politics, his death is a great loss to the country. Mr. Chatterjee was a symbol of value-based politics and his long career as Parliamentarian is characterized by value and principle”.

Prof Mukhi further said that the veteran communist leader Somnath Chatterjee’s stint as the Speaker of Lok Sabha would always be remembered as he took the integrity of the Speaker’s independent position altogether to a new height. He enriched Indian politics with his political prudence.

He also expressed his condolences to the bereaved family and prayed to the Almighty for eternal peace of the departed soul, a Raj Bhawan communiqué said.

Sonowal mourns demise

Chief Minister Sarbanadna Sonowal expressed his condolences over the death of veteran Communist leader Somnath Chatterjee who breathed his last this morning.

In a statement, Chief Minister Sonowal said that with the death of Somnath Chatterjee the country has lost an able son who contributed greatly to the growth of parliamentary democracy in India. During his long career as Parliamentarian, he practiced value-based politics and strengthened the foundation of democratic traditions in the country. Widely respected across the country cutting across the party line, his death is an irreparable loss to the country. Remembering his tenure as the Speaker of Lok Sabha during 2004 to 2009, Sonowal said that his role as the Speaker in the House of the People gave a new meaning to the Chair.

He also expressed his sympathy to the members of the bereaved family and prayed to the Almighty for eternal peace to the departed soul, a government release said.

Patowary condoles demise

Industries and Commerce Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary has deeply condoled the demise of former Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee. In a condolence statement, the Minister said, ‘Somnath Chatterjee stood for ideals and principles of democracy. His strict adherence to uphold our rich democratic tradition will be ever remembered.’

Saikia mourns demise

The Leader of Opposition of the Assam Legislative Assembly Debabrata Saikia has expressed his condolences at the demise of former Speaker of the Lok Sabha Somnath Chatterjee. Saikia said Late Chatterjee’s performance as Speaker of the Lok Sabha could serve as a lesson on how to conduct a House in a Parliamentary democracy.
