

GUWAHATI: A state-level orientation workshop on 'Framework Convention of Tobacco Control' FCTC Article 5.3 was organized jointly by the International Union against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease & the State Tobacco Control Cell, Directorate of Health Services, Assam with the objective of protection of public health policies with respect to tobacco control from commercial and other vested interests of the tobacco industry on December 23, 2022, at hotel in Guwahati.

Dy Director (DHS) and opening remarks by Dr Kareng Rongpipi, Additional Director (Health Services), the distinguished gathering listened to presentations on relevant topics like "Tobacco Industry Interference- The Indian context & tobacco industry interference index India 2021-2022 which was delivered by Mr Pranay Lal, The UNION, New-Delhi; Global &national experiences on monitoring and countering tobacco industry interferences by Dr Shivam Kapoor, The UNION, New-Delhi; Need for implementing a whole of government approach in preventing tobacco industry interference & code of conduct adopted by the MoHFW and way forward for its smooth implementation by Dr Amit Yadav from the UNION, New-Delhi.
All the participants expressed their desire to work together to counter the health threats posed by tobacco as a product and by the tobacco industry in particular at the conclusion of the workshop, a press release said.
