Bid to recruit 63 Assistant Engineers departmentally

STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI: The State Water Resources Department has informed the Gauhati High Court that it has scrapped the earlier decision to departmentally recruit 63 Assistant Engineers (Civil). Instead, the recruitment will be done through the Assam Public Service Commission (APSC).

This submission by the Water Resources Department's counsel was made during hearing of a Writ Appeal filed by some aggrieved job aspirants. The petitioners filed the writ appeal after a single judge had earlier refrained from directing the Water Resources Department to conduct the recruitment process through the APSC. The single judge had, however, made some observations regarding rectification of some of the procedures mentioned in the impugned advertisement issued by the Water Resources Department on July 19, 2021.

Once the department's counsel declared its change in stance regarding the mode of recruitment at the latest hearing of the matter, a two-judge Bench of the High Court closed the writ appeal while observing that "nothing survives for further consideration of this Court in this Writ Appeal inasmuch as if the stand of the Department is that they will make the recruitment through the APSC, the claim in the writ petition would be virtually considered to be admitted, and as such the cause of action does not survive any longer." The court further made it clear that although the results of the earlier departmental recruitment process were declared vide a Notification dated May 7 this year, "the same cannot be given effect to."
