GUWAHATI: If the latest data of the Assam State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (ASCPCR) are any indication, there has been a steady rise in crime against children in the State since the past few years.

The ASCPCR registered 95 cases for protection of child rights in 2016, 101 cases in 2017, 157 cases in 2018, 149 cases in 2019, 116 cases in 2020 and 54 such cases in this year till July 15.

If we look at these cases under various heads, total nine cases of child trafficking were registered in 2016 and six in 2017. This number increased to 11 in 2018, 14 in 2019 and 14 in 2020. Till July 15, 2021, five child trafficking cases have already been registered by the ASCPCR.

Eight cases of child labour were registered in 2016, nine in 2017, 10 in 2018, eight in 2019, 12 in 2020 and three till July 15, 2021. The number of child sexual abuse cases is alarming. In 2016, 21 such cases were registered by ASCPCR, seven in 2017, 53 in 2018, 44 in 2019, 32 in 2020 and 20 cases till July 15, 2021.

Total four child marriage cases were registered in 2016, 10 in 2017, six in 2018, eight in 2019, seven in 2020 and three cases till July 15, 2021.

As per date of ASCPCR, there are 10 registered government-run children observation homes across the State, 95 NGO-run children homes, 21 specialized adoption agencies and three registered open shelters.
