GUWAHATI: Despite being a patient suffering from acute blood cancer, Riaj Ali has secured 95 per cent aggregate marks in the HSLC-2020 examinations, whose results were declared here on Saturday. Riaj's is one of the biggest success stories in the annals of HSLC examination. The incredible result of Riaj has also made him a hero and a role model for those battling cancer in the State.

Dr Munlima Hazarika, Professor, Medical & Pediatric Oncology at Dr. B. Borooah Cancer Institute (BBCI) who has been treating Riaj for the last one year, told The Sentinel on Saturday evening that she was literally in tears after getting the HSLC news about her patient. She said that when Riaj was preparing for the HSLC examination, he was undergoing the most critical and tough phase of his treatment.

"Riaj had also undergone chemotherapy. Under such treatment condition, patients normally do not remain in their normal frame or state of mind. But Riaj has made miracles and overcome all hurdles to equally excel in the tough HSLC examination," Dr Hazarika said.

Riaj, who studied in Jaluguti HS School in Morigaon district, has secured 569 out of the grand total marks of 600. He secured letter marks in English, Assamese, General Mathematics, General Science and Social Science. He scored full marks (100) in General Science. Riaj hails from Tokunabori village in Morigaon district. He stays with his parents — Nizamuddin Ahmed (father) and Mery Begum (mother). His father owns a pan shop. Dr Hazarika pointed out that the treatment of Riaz who suffered from Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) was started at BBCI a year ago. He is still undergoing different phases of treatment. The doctor added that it will take another year to complete the treatment of Riaj.

"Treatment of the type of leukemia Riaj is suffering will be long and tough. But the way Riaj is responding to medication and therapies, we are hopeful and confident of curing him totally. His will power will definitely make many more miracles happen," Dr Hazarika said, adding that she will help Riaj in all his future academic endeavours Overwhelmed with Riaj's success, BBCI Director Dr Amal Chandra Kataki assured that his institute will bear all costs of his treatment in the future. The BBCI is already providing him free treatment.

"Riaj is not only an asset for the society but also a role model to inspire thousands of people battling cancer. Will power and determination is very important for cancer patients to conquer the disease. And Riaj is a perfect example," Dr Kataki said.
